How to Make a Game

Each game on Sugarcane is based on a data set that contains the information you want to learn about. One data set can have many games based on it. For example, here are four games about the countries of the world that use the Countries of the World data set. To explore how they were made, click the INSPECT button on the game’s page.

Using Your Own Data

If you have your own data you would like to use, you can make a customized game in three simple steps. Get started now or click the CREATE A NEW GAME button from the home page or your dashboard at any time.

In the first step, you will choose which type of game you want to make. To learn more about all of our game types, see the tutorial on How to Choose a Game Type. Here’s what the first step looks like:

The second step is to create the data for your game. If you have previously created data sets on Sugarcane, you can choose to use one of those rather than create a new one. Otherwise, you will enter new data. Later on, you can create more games using the same data you enter for this one! Here’s what it looks like when you are entering data:

After you have your game type and data, the final step is to choose which columns from the data set you want to use in your game. When you’re done, give your game a name, click CREATE GAME, and you are ready to start playing! Here’s what it looks like if you are creating a Grid Matching game:

For more specific help on Steps 2 and 3, see the tutorials for each game type in the Help Center.

Using an Existing Data Set

To make your own game using an existing data set, first pick a data set you find interesting from the variety on the home page. Here are a few you can start with if you aren't sure what to choose:

If you don't see what you are looking for, perhaps you want to enter in your own data? Use the flow described above to easily create a new game from scratch with your own data.

Once you have your data set, click the MAKE YOUR OWN GAME tile from the data set’s page to start making your game. The first step is to choose which type of game you want to make. To learn more about all of our game types, see the tutorial on How to Choose a Game Type.

After selecting the type, you will choose which columns from the data set you want to use in your game, give the game a name, and be ready to start playing! Here’s what it looks like if you are making a Grid Matching game:

For more specific help on choosing appropriate columns for your game, see the tutorials for each game type in the Help Center.
